Hundreds of United States (US) troops have reportedly withdrawn from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, according to a report by The New York Times citing anonymous sources at the Pentagon. This withdrawal is considered a preemptive measure amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The report also mentions the evacuation of troops from Bahrain, where the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet is based.
However, American troops remain stationed in several countries in the region, including Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. This move comes amid concerns that the US is considering a strike against Iran.

Tehran has previously been expected to retaliate against any attack by targeting US military bases and assets in the Middle East.
In an official letter to the United Nations (UN), the head of Iran’s mission to the UN warned that if his country were attacked, all bases, facilities, and assets of enemy forces in the region would become legitimate targets.
Iran also asserted that the United States will bear full responsibility for any consequences that may arise.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command, which oversees the region, including Iran and its surrounding areas, has not yet issued an official response to the report.
For information, Al Udeid is the largest US military base in the Middle East. It has approximately 10,000 personnel stationed there.
The partial withdrawal of troops from this strategic facility marks a potential shift in regional security dynamics that could have far-reaching implications. Not only for the Gulf states, but also for global stability.
